Wisteria floribunda Macrobotrys (Burford) is a long-lived, vigorous, clockwise twining, deciduous climber with large, pinnate, dark green leaves, bronze when young, brilliant yellow in autumn. Masses of tiny, pale lilac-blue flowers with yellow throats appear in long, hanging clusters and bloom in spring and summer. Flowers are followed by been-like pods in late summer, persisting on branches throughout the winter. Wisteria floribunda Macrobotrys can adapt to a wide range of soils, but prefers moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. Once established, it is tolerant of drought. It can withstand low temperatures, but needs to be sheltered from cold, drying winds. Flower buds may be damaged by spring frosts. Needs regular pruning to control its shape and size. Japanese Blue Wisteria is a vigorous, highly ornamental climber, perfect for growing against a house wall, on arbours, pergolas, fences, and trellises. With a strong support, it can be trained to grow as a tree.
