Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' is a vigorous, fast-growing, coniferous, evergreen tree of pyramidal habit, with reddish-brown peeling bark, and aromatic, glossy, dark green leaves that grow in spreading or dropping sprays. They may turn bronze in winter. When crushed, the foliage has pineapple scent. It bears attractive, egg-shaped cones. Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. It doesn’t like dry conditions and prefers cool summer climates. Resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered from harsh, drying winds. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. If grown as a hedge, it needs to be trimmed twice a year. Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' can be a great specimen or accent plant, but since it grows fast and is tolerant of hard pruning and trimming, it is ideal for creating beautiful formal hedges and screens. Great as a background plant or for beds and borders.
