Syringa vulgaris 'Andenken an Ludwig Späth' is an upright, spreading, deciduous shrub with round, half-open habit, attractive, heart-shaped, dark green leaves, and beautiful, very fragrant, single, deep wine-red flowers growing in long, slender panicles and blooming in late spring and summer. Attractive to birds and butterflies. Syringa vulgaris 'Andenken an Ludwig Späth' grows best in fertile, humus-rich, slightly alkaline, moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun and best flowering occurs in full sun, but it tolerates partial shade. It needs good air-circulation. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. It is very resistant to frost and can withstand wind. Low maintenance, doesn’t require regular pruning. Lilac 'Andenken an Ludwig Späth', with its stunning, long-blooming flowers and lovely foliage, is one of the best purple lilacs. It is perfect as a specimen or accent plant in cottage, urban and coastal gardens. Great for shrub borders, flowering hedges and foundational plantings. Suitable for growing in containers on patios and roof gardens.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us

During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.

What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
