Pinus pumila 'Glauca', commonly known as the dwarf Siberian pine or Japanese stone pine, is a small, slow-growing evergreen tree that is native to eastern Asia. It is a popular ornamental tree because of its unique, dense foliage and beautiful blue-green needles that can add an attractive contrast to any landscape. The 'Glauca' cultivar is notable for its stunning blue-grey needles that grow to about 1 inch in length. The needles are arranged in pairs, and the tree produces tiny cones that are about 1 inch long. The bark of the tree is a reddish-brown color that can be quite striking in the winter months when the tree is bare. Pinus pumila 'Glauca' is a hardy tree that is well-suited to cold climates, and it can withstand temperatures as low as -50°F. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun, and it is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Because of its small size, 'Glauca' is often used in rock gardens, as a border plant, or as a specimen tree in small gardens. It can also be used to create a bonsai, as it responds well to pruning and shaping.
