Pieris japonica 'Variegata' is a small, compact, rounded, evergreen shrub with variegated, narrowly ovate, glossy dark green leaves with creamy-yellow margins, pink when young. Clusters of small, dropping, white, bell-shaped flowers bloom in early spring and are followed by seed capsules. Pieris japonica 'Variegata' thrives in fertile, organically rich, acidic, medium moisture, well-drained soils. It grows best in partial shade, but is tolerant of full sun. It is very resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered from harsh winter winds, especially when young. It can withstand urban pollution and is suitable for growing in cities. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Pieris japonica 'Variegata', with its variegated evergreen leaves, looks stunning all year round, especially when new pink growth emerges. It is great as a specimen or accent plant. Excellent for beds and borders, foundation plantings, banks and slopes. Suitable for growing in containers and for low, informal hedges and screens.
