Pieris japonica 'Purity' is a medium-sized, slow-growing, bushy, evergreen shrub of compact, rounded habit with glossy, oval, rich green leaves, pale green when young. Clusters of lovely, fragrant, bell-shaped, pure-white flowers, resembling Lily-of-the-Valley, on long, arching stems, bloom in late spring. Pieris japonica 'Purity' thrives in moderately fertile, hummus-rich, acidic, well-drained soils, and is not tolerant of soggy soils. It prefers full sun, but grows well in partial shade. Once established, somewhat resistant to drought. It is tolerant of frost, but needs to be sheltered form harsh, winter winds. Generally, pest-free. Low maintenance plant. Pieris japonica 'Purity' is a wonderful small shrub, the best white-flowering variety, with lovely pure-white flowers against rich-green foliage. Perfect as a foundation plant, in beds and borders, and banks and slopes in informal, cottage, woodland, and urban gardens. Suitable for growing in pots and containers. Excellent for acidic soils beneath conifers and hardwoods.
