Photinia x fraseri ‘Chico’ is an ornamental, dwarf, compact, rounded, evergreen shrub with bushy, upright habit and lovely red stems. Leathery, elliptic, toothed, glossy, dark green leaves are reddish-bronze when young. Panicles of small, creamy-white flowers bloom in spring and are sometimes followed by red berries. Spring pruning eliminates flowers and stimulates new red growth. Photinia x fraseri ‘Chico’ is the smallest of all Photinias. It thrives in hummus-rich, fertile, slightly acidic, medium moisture, well-drained soils, but is adaptable to a wide range of soils, except waterlogged and compact. Once established, it is resistant to frost and drought. Young leaves may be damaged by late frosts, therefore, it should be sheltered, especially from harsh, drying winds. Low maintenance plant. Photinia x fraseri ‘Chico’ is a lovely, dwarf shrub, beautiful all year round and perfect as a specimen plant in small gardens. It looks great in rock and gravel gardens, perennial beds and borders, or as a low dividing hedge. Excellent for growing in pots and containers.
