Pyrus communis 'Beurre Hardy' is a vigorous, upright, pyramidal, deciduous tree with ovate, glossy, dark green leaves and profusion of creamy-white flowers in early spring. It bears moderate, regular crops of large, tasty, red-flushed, greenish-yellow pears ready for harvesting in October. The fruit has excellent flavour and pleasantly melting flesh. Pyrus communis 'Beurre Hardy' can grow in a wide range of soils, except damp or filled with stones. It thrives in fertile, neutral, moist, well-drained soils. It prefers sunny, sheltered positions and the fruit is best when grown in full sun. It is extremely resistant to frost but since it is a very early bloomer, flower buds may be damaged by late frosts. It can withstand wind. It is self-sterile and needs to be grown with a pollination partner. Pear 'Doyenné du Comice' is primarily grown for its sweet and delicious fruit, but beautiful, white flowers make it a great ornamental tree. Ideal for small informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us

During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.

What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
