Drimys aromatica is a vigorous, evergreen shrub with dense, upright habit, deep red stems and long, oval, leathery, glossy green, cinnamon-scented leaves, copper-tinted when young. If crushed, these aromatic leaves are extremely spicy and taste strongly of pepper. Clusters of tiny, fragrant, star-shaped, creamy flowers bloom in spring and are followed by edible black berries in autumn. Drimys aromatica prefers fertile, acidic, lime-free, moist but well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is not suitable for colder areas since it cannot withstand very low temperatures. It needs to be sheltered form cold, drying winds. Generally, disease-free and pest-free. It requires some pruning. Drimys aromatica is an exotic-looking, very decorative evergreen shrub, perfect for cottage, urban, or woodland gardens. It is great as a specimen plant, in shrub borders, or planted in containers. It can be used for hedges or privacy screens.
