The Cornus florida 'Rubra', commonly known as the Pink Flowering Dogwood, is a deciduous tree native to North America. It is a cultivated variety of the Cornus florida species, prized for its stunning pink blossoms, which set it apart from the typical white-flowering form. This small to medium-sized tree reaches an average height of 5–10 metres (15–30 feet) and spreads nearly as wide, forming an elegant, rounded canopy.
One of its most striking features is its early spring bloom. In March or April, before the leaves fully emerge, the tree produces a profusion of showy pink bracts that surround tiny, yellow-green true flowers. These bracts deepen in colour with age, often ranging from soft blush to deep rose-pink, depending on growing conditions and cultivar variation. The display lasts for several weeks, making it a valuable ornamental feature in gardens and landscapes.
As the seasons progress, Cornus florida 'Rubra' continues to impress. Its foliage, a vibrant green throughout summer, turns brilliant shades of red, burgundy, and purple in autumn, adding to its year-round appeal. By late summer and early autumn, clusters of glossy red berries appear, providing a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife.
This tree thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with ample organic matter. It prefers partial shade to full sun, though it benefits from some shelter in particularly hot climates. It is relatively low-maintenance.
With its breathtaking floral display, striking autumn colour, and wildlife appeal, Cornus florida 'Rubra' is an exceptional choice for gardens, parks, and woodland settings, offering beauty across multiple seasons.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us
During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.
What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
