Cornus florida is a large, deciduous shrub or a small tree with spreading habit, gracious horizontal branches, and oval, mid-green leaves that turn purple and scarlet-red in autumn. The mature bark has a distinctive pattern that looks like alligator skin. Lovely, star-like, creamy white flowers emerge before the leaves and are followed by red-orange berries in summer. Attractive to birds and butterflies. Cornus florida grows best in fertile, acidic to neutral, moist but well-drained soil, in partial shade. It tolerates full sun, but in summer, it needs to be sheltered if planted in exposed places. Generally, pest-free. Low maintenance, it doesn’t require pruning. Cornus florida, with its lovely, white flowers and spectacular autumn colours, is a beautiful landscape tree all year round. It is perfect as a specimen plant and equally attractive when planted in groups. Great around patios, in lawns, or in woodland gardens.
