Cornus controversa, commonly known as the giant dogwood or wedding cake tree, is a deciduous tree that belongs to the family Cornaceae. It is native to Japan, Korea, and China and is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in many parts of the world. The tree can grow up to 15-20 meters in height and has a spread of 8-10 meters. It has a broad, spreading crown and a striking layered structure of branches, giving it the appearance of a tiered wedding cake. The leaves are oval-shaped, 8-15 cm in length, and turn a bright red or purple color in the fall. In late spring or early summer, the tree produces clusters of small, white flowers that are followed by blue-black berries in the fall. The flowers and fruits are not particularly showy, but the tree's unique branching pattern and attractive foliage make it a popular ornamental tree. Cornus controversa prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial shade, but can also tolerate full sun. It is a relatively fast-growing tree and can be propagated through seeds or cuttings.
