The Azalea Japonica 'Radja' is a stunning evergreen shrub belonging to the Rhododendron family, prized for its vibrant blooms and year-round foliage. This compact azalea is particularly well-suited to gardens, patios, and containers, offering a striking display of colour in spring.

Azalea Japonica 'Radja' is a relatively small, bushy shrub, typically reaching a height of 60-80cm with a similar spread. Its dense, rounded growth habit makes it an excellent choice for borders, rockeries, and container planting. The foliage consists of small, glossy, dark green leaves, which provide a beautiful backdrop to its impressive floral display.

One of the most captivating features of ‘Radja’ is its abundant, bright pinkish-red flowers, which bloom profusely from April to June. Each flower is trumpet-shaped, measuring around 4-5cm in diameter, and often features a slightly darker throat, adding depth to its rich colouration. The vibrant blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in the garden.

Azalea Japonica ‘Radja’ thrives in acidic, well-drained soil with good moisture retention. It prefers a partially shaded position, although it can tolerate some sun if kept adequately watered. Like most azaleas, it benefits from mulching with pine bark or ericaceous compost to maintain soil acidity. Regular watering, particularly in dry spells, is essential for healthy growth, but it is important to avoid waterlogging.

This low-maintenance shrub requires only light pruning after flowering to maintain its compact shape and encourage new growth. Hardy down to approximately -10°C, it is well-suited to UK gardens but may require some protection in particularly harsh winters.

Azalea Japonica ‘Radja’ is perfect for Japanese-style gardens, woodland borders, and mixed shrub beds. Its compact nature makes it ideal for small gardens, courtyards, and container planting on patios or balconies. Whether used as a specimen plant or in a group, it adds a vibrant splash of spring colour.
