Azalea Japonica 'Johanna' - A Burst of Brilliant Colour

Introduction: Discover the vibrant and stunning Azalea Japonica 'Johanna', a must-have addition to any British garden. With its rich, vivid hues and easy-to-grow nature, this Japanese azalea variety is a perfect choice for adding a touch of colour to your outdoor space. This compact, evergreen shrub is a delightful specimen that thrives in the British climate, providing a reliable, long-lasting splash of colour year after year.

Description:

Azalea Japonica 'Johanna' is a compact, evergreen shrub that typically reaches a height of 60-80cm (24-31 inches) and spreads to around 60-100cm (24-39 inches) wide. Its dense, dark green foliage creates a stunning backdrop for the eye-catching clusters of deep, fuchsia-pink, funnel-shaped flowers. The blossoms appear from late April to early June, providing a magnificent display that attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies to your garden.

Growing Conditions:

Azalea Japonica 'Johanna' thrives in acidic, well-drained soil and prefers a partially shaded location. Although it can tolerate some sunlight, it is essential to protect the plant from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and cause the flowers to fade. The ideal pH range for the soil is 4.5 to 6.0, and you may need to amend your soil with peat moss, compost, or other acidic materials if it doesn't naturally fall within this range.

Planting and Care:

  1. Plant your Azalea Japonica 'Johanna' in early spring or early autumn, when the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
  2. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and deep as the root ball, and backfill with a mix of acidic planting compost and soil.
  3. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture levels, especially during the first few years as the plant establishes itself. Avoid over-watering, as this can lead to root rot.
  4. Apply a layer of mulch, such as pine bark or pine needles, around the base of the plant to help conserve moisture, maintain acidity, and suppress weeds.
  5. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

Azalea Japonica 'Johanna' is a low-maintenance plant, resistant to most pests and diseases. With minimal care and attention, this beautiful shrub will reward you with a dazzling floral display that brightens up your garden and creates a striking focal point. Bring this captivating beauty to your garden by adding the Azalea Japonica 'Johanna' to your collection today.
