Acer palmatum 'Starfish' is a small, upright, shrubby deciduous tree with palmate, deeply divided, narrowly lance-shaped, toothed, reddish-purple leaves, bright red in autumn, resembling the starfish. Small, inconspicuous, reddish flowers bloom in spring and are followed by green, red-flushed, winged seed pods. Acer palmatum 'Starfish' is adaptable to a wide range of soils, but prefers fertile, organically rich, slightly acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in partial shade and best leaf colour is achieved in partial shade, but can withstand full sun. Excessive exposure and lack of soil moist may cause leaf scorch. It is resistant to frost but needs to be sheltered from harsh winds. Low maintenance plant, needs little to no pruning. Japanese maple 'Starfish' is a small, stunning, unusual, ornamental tree perfect for smaller informal, cottage, urban, and rock gardens. It is great for sheltered beds and borders. Excellent for growing in pots and containers on patios or balconies.
