Acer palmatum Seryru is a medium-sized, vase-shaped deciduous shrub or small tree of upright and columnar growth. Its palmate, feathery, lacy foliage is finely dissected, lime green in spring, green with red tinge in summer, and golden, orange, and red in autumn. This plant is very unique because it’s the only dissected form of Japanese maple with an upright habit (instead of domed or weeping). Its vase-based shape becomes rounder over the years. Seiryu maple prefers moist, well-drained soil of any kind, preferably slightly acidic. Best leaf colour is achieved in partial shade, but it tolerates full sun very well. Lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure can cause leaf scorch. Acer palmatum Seryru is great for small, urban or cottage gardens, rock gardens, and for growing in containers. Colourful decorative leaves are spectacular in autumn, which makes this tree a great specimen plant.
