Acer davidii belongs to the group of “Snake Bark Maples” because of its distinctive white and green striped bark resembling snake skin. It’s a small to medium, understory, deciduous tree with an upright, spreading, capricious growing crown with oval, unlobed, or shallowly lobed, dark green leaves. In autumn, the leaves turn gold, orange, and red and are very attractive. Small, yellowish flowers are replaced by pink-brown fruit. Acer davidii is easily grown on average, moist, but well-drained soils, in full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant to drought, resistant to frost, and can withstand wind. There are no serious problems with pests and diseases. Because of its strongly branched root system, it doesn’t tolerate paving and is most suitable for parks and large gardens. It was named after the Jesuit priest, Jean Pierre Armand David, who discovered it in China in 1869.
