Cedrus deodara is a large, evergreen, fast-growing coniferous tree of pyramidal habit and pendulous horizontal branching. Long, elegant branches with weeping tips bear glaucous, whorled light blue or greyish green needle-like leaves. Male cones are upright, scattered on lower branches, releasing pollen in autumn and then falling to the ground. Female cones are upright, solitary or in pairs, and need 2 years to mature. Deodar Cedar prefers deep, rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil in full sun. It needs to be protected from hard winds and can be damaged by frost. Once established, it is tolerant to drought and hot, humid summers. Moderately tolerant to salt. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Cedrus deodara is one of the most graceful conifers, perfect as a specimen plant in large gardens. Great in groups or as a screen. It can be attractive in cities as a street tree if lower branches are removed.
