Acer palmatum Beni-maiko, or Red Hired Dancing Girl, is a variety of Japanese maple. It’s a small, compact, bushy shrub or small tree with stunning foliage. Five-lobed leaves are bright red in spring, then fade to pinkish-red and green in summer, and finally turn to orange and fiery red in autumn. This plant is very easy to grow. It loves moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. For best results, it needs to be in partial shade, but it can tolerate full sun. It doesn’t like strong winds so it should be sheltered. Lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure can cause leaf scorch. It maintains its shape without pruning. This is a fantastic ornamental tree for small yards, city gardens, banks and slopes, or rock gardens. It is also suitable for growing in containers and pots, as long as they are insulated during the cold weather.
