Vaccinium corymbosum is a medium-sized, dense, rounded, deciduous shrub with small, narrowly ovate, blue-green leaves and yellow, coppery red, and purple in autumn. Sprays of urn-shaped, creamy-white flowers bloom in late spring and early summer and are followed by clusters of round, sweet, dark blue to purple blueberries in autumn. Attractive to birds, butterflies, and bees. Vaccinium corymbosum, or Bluberry, grows best in fertile, organically rich, slightly acidic, moisture-retentive, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun, but tolerates partial shade. It needs to be sheltered form harsh winds. It is self-fertile, but cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop. It doesn’t have any serious pest or disease problems. Low maintenance plant, but it can benefit from some pruning in winter. Blueberries, with its lovely flowers, excellent autumn foliage, and attractive berries, is a great ornamental shrub, but is mostly grown for its fruit production. Perfect for shrub borders or hedges and screens in informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens.
