Skimmia Japonica ‘Rubella’ is a small, compact, bushy, evergreen shrub with aromatic, elliptic, dark green leaves, terminal panicles of dark red flower buds in autumn and winter, and fragrant, white flowers opening in spring. It’s a male, non-fruiting skimmia. A male variety is needed for female skimmias to provide berries. Skimmia Japonica ‘Rubella’ grows best in moderately fertile, chalky or loamy, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in partial shade. In full sun, its leaves may yellow and scorch. It is resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered from harsh winter winds. Tolerant of urban pollution. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Skimmia 'Rubella' is a lovely, decorative small shrub suitable for informal, cottage, urban, and wildlife gardens. Ideal for growing in containers. Excellent for shrub borders, banks and slopes, or foundation plantings. Good for informal, low hedges and screens.
