Cornus florida Cherokee Chief is a large deciduous shrub or a small tree with rounded, symmetrical habit and graceful horizontal branches. Its attractive foliage is bronze-red in spring, green in summer and burgundy-red in autumn. Beautiful, large, star-like, deep ruby-red flowers emerge in spring before the leaves. Flowers are followed by red fruit that cling from bare branches throughout the winter. Cornus florida Cherokee Chief grows best in fertile, acidic to neutral, moist but well-drained soil, in partial shade. It tolerates full sun, but needs to be sheltered in exposed places. Generally, pest-free. It is more heat and disease resistant than other members of the species. Low maintenance, doesn’t require pruning. Cornus florida Cherokee Chief is a stunning landscape tree all year round. It is perfect as a specimen plant and equally attractive when planted in groups. Great around patios, in lawns, or in woodland gardens.
