Cornus alba 'Westonbirt' is a vigorous, medium-sized, suckering, deciduous shrub, popular for its stunning, scarlet red winter bark. Its bare, bright red stems make an outstanding display from November to March, especially after a snowfall. It has green leaves that turn red and orange in autumn and small, white flowers in early summer, followed by white berries, tinged blue in autumn. Cornus alba 'Westonbirt' prefers average, moist, slightly acidic soils that are well-drained, but will grow in almost any soil condition, even waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Generally, pest-free. Easy to grow and low maintenance. It should be pruned hard in spring to enhance stem colour. Cornus alba 'Westonbirt' is a dogwood originally cultivated at Westonbirt Arboretum in the 1830s. It’s a great winter feature, good as a specimen plant, but even better when planted in groups. Perfect for cottage and informal gardens.
