Cryptomeria ‘Japonica elegans’ is an elegant, broadly columnar, coniferous, evergreen tree with red-brown bark, spreading tiered branches, and dense evergreen foliage. Its soft, feathery, needle-like foliage is green in spring and summer, and turns attractive red-bronze in autumn and winter. It may be with or without cones. Cryptomeria ‘Japonica elegans’ can grow in a wide range of soil types and conditions, but prefers slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Resistant to frost and low temperatures, but needs to be sheltered from harsh winds. It has weak roots and sometimes bends over. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Japanese cedar 'Elegans Compacta' is an interesting, architectural, dwarf Japanese cedar perfect for smaller informal, cottage, and urban gardens. Great for rock and gravel gardens. Excellent for informal hedges and screens.
