Photinia × fraseri ‘Magical Volcano’ is a new, improved photinia, a cross between Fraser’s hedging photinia and Chinese photinia serratifolia. It’s a large, evergreen shrub with stunning, colourful leaves with pronounced serrated edges. The leaves are fiery red when young, dark green when mature, and coppery-red in autumn and winter. Panicles of creamy-white flowers bloom in late spring and are sometimes followed by red berries. Photinia × fraseri Magical Volcano can adapt to a wide range of soils, but prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun and the best leaf colour is achieved in full sun. It can withstand frost, but needs to be sheltered from drying, winter winds. Generally, disease-free. May require some pruning. Christmas berry ‘Magical Volcano’ is a gorgeous evergreen shrub with strong and long-lasting colour, ideal for dense, compact, and attractive hedges and screens. It is also great as a standalone shrub.
