Iris is a rhizomatous or bulbous herbaceous perennial with narrow, strap-like, emerald green leaves and long, slender stems with beautiful, showy flowers. Flower head consists of 3 large spreading or pendant petals, and 3 smaller, erect, standard petals. Colours vary from violet and purple, to orange and red, to yellow and white, even black. Blooming time is usually in spring or summer, sometimes in autumn. It is best to grow iris in rich, fertile, medium moisture, neutral to slightly alkaline, well-drained soils, in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade but best flowering is achieved in full sun. All irises need at least 6 hours of full sun. Some varieties can grow in wet and marshy areas, even in standing water. Rhizomatous types need to be divided and replanted every 2-5 years. Generally, disease-free. Iris is a beautiful and very popular plant, perfect for beds and borders, banks and slopes, or pots and containers. Great for cottage, coastal, and urban gardens.
