Arundo donax versicolor, or Variegated Giant Red, is a vigorous, robust, clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial grass. Its ornamental foliage has long strap-shaped, cream and green, striped leaves. Feathery-looking clusters of inconspicuous, tiny, purple flowers emerge in autumn and turn white as they mature. It generally doesn’t produce fruit. It grows very well in fertile, moist soil of any kind. The soil doesn’t have to be well-drained as this plant doesn’t mind poorly drained soils and can thrive in waterside gardens. It prefers full sun but tolerates dappled shade. It is prone to wind damage so it needs to be planted in a sheltered position. It is a resilient plant, generally pest-free and disease free. Arundo donax versicolor is very decorative grass, especially near the water, perfect for pond, lake or river banks and marsh gardens. Also great for privacy screening and as a backing plant for mixed borders.
