Prunus cerasus 'Montmorency' is an upright, rounded, deciduous cherry tree with ovate, serrated, dark green leaves, orange and red in autumn, lovely white flowers blooming in spring, and large, glossy, edible, sour, dark red cherry fruits ready for harvesting in summer. Cherries have firm yellow flesh and great rich flavour and are perfect for pies, jams, and preserves. Prunus cerasus 'Montmorency' is adaptable to a wide range of soils, but grows best in fertile, slightly acidic, loamy, medium moisture, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun and partial shade. It is resistant to frost but needs protection from cold, drying winds. Frost may damage the flower buds. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require much pruning. Self-pollinating plant but for the best crop, several trees should be planted nearby. Tart Cherry is a lovely tree, great addition to any cottage, informal, and urban garden. Great for wall-side borders or informal hedges and screens. Mostly grown for its tasty cherries.
