Prunus domestica is a small, twiggy, deciduous, fruiting tree with arching branches and oval, toothed, green leaves. Lovely, white flowers appear in clusters of 2 or 3, in spring, at the same time as leaves. Plum fruits are smooth, round to oblong, red, blue, purple or black with juicy, sweet, sometimes sour, greenish or yellow flesh, ready for harvesting summer or autumn. Prunus domestica grows best in moderately fertile, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils, but can adapt to a wide range of soils. It thrives in full sun or dappled shade. It is resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered from harsh winter winds. It is self-fertile, but the crop is better with a pollinator nearby. Rarely attacked by diseases. Requires some pruning and fruit thinning. Prunus domestica is a popular fruit tree grown mostly for its juicy, tasty fruit, but also has some decorative value. Plums can be eaten fresh, dried or used for culinary purposes.
