Malus ‘John Downie’ is an ornamental, deciduous tree with wide, oval to round, half-open crown, and ovate, glossy, green leaves, buttery-yellow in autumn. Lovely, single, white flowers that open from pink buds, bloom in May and are followed by plum-like, firm and crunchy, orange-red fruits, that remain on branches throughout the winter. These crab apples are tasteful and great for jams and jellies. Attractive to birds and bees. Malus ‘John Downie’ can grow well in almost any type of soil, as long as it is well-drained, but thrives in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. Once established, it is resistant to drought. It can withstand frost, wind, and urban pollution. Generally, disease-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require much pruning. Malus ‘John Downie’ is a lovely ornamental tree, ideal for smaller informal, cottage and urban gardens. It is very popular for its delicious fruits great for culinary use.
