Acer palmatum 'Kagiri-nishiki' is a small, deciduous, slow-growing, vase-shaped shrub with a compact, narrow habit and unique, attractive foliage. Five-lobed, grey-green leaves with cream-pink margins, turn crimson-gold in autumn. Corymbs of inconspicuous pinkish-red pendent flowers bloom in April and May, and are followed by winged fruit. It grows well in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers partial shade, but tolerates full sun very well. It needs to be sheltered from harsh winds. Easy to care for, it requires very little pruning. Lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure can cause leaf scorch. Acer palmatum 'Kagiri-nishiki' is great as a specimen plant, perfect for cottage and urban gardens, suitable for growing in containers and pots. It is very decorative and eye-catching, especially in autumn.
