Chamaerops humilis, or European Fan Palm, is a bushy, medium-sized, single or multi-trunked, evergreen palm with a large, blue-green to silver green, fan-shaped foliage. The panicles of bright yellow flowers emerge in spring, exclusively on mature plants, and are followed by small, round, yellow-orange fruits in autumn. European Fan Palm is the only palm native to Europe and one of the most adaptable species of palms. It grows best in Mediterranean-type climates. It prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils, in full sun, but can tolerate partial shade and poor soils. Very resilient. It can withstand extreme heat and cold, winds, salt, or drought. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Chamaerops humilis is a beautiful specimen plant. If pruned it will grow in a single-trunk form, if not in a shrubby form. It can grow in cold gardens or hot conservatories, coastal or urban gardens, indoors and outdoors. Suitable for growing in containers.
