Azalea Japonica is a small to medium-sized, compact, bushy, evergreen shrub with leathery, ovate, medium-green leaves and clusters of attractive, fragrant, funnel-shaped white, red, pink, or purple flowers blooming in spring and early summer. Attractive to birds and butterflies. Azalea Japonica prefers fertile, humus-rich, acidic soils. It has shallow roots so it needs constantly moist, but very well-drained soils, otherwise it can suffer from root rot. It thrives in partial shade to full sun, but full sun may cause leaf scorch. It is resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered form harsh, winter winds. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Japanese Azalea is a beautiful, floriferous, evergreen shrub, easy to grow and maintain. It is perfect for banks and slopes, shrub borders and mixed borders, low informal hedges and screens, and foundational plantings. It is excellent for informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens. Because of its shallow roots, very suitable for growing in pots and containers.
