Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' is a vigorous, compact, rounded, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or small tree, with ovate, medium green leaves. Fragrant, star-shaped, deep purplish-pink, white inside, flowers with 12 narrow petals open from purple buds and bloom in early to mid-spring. Magnolia 'Leonard Messel' grows best in fertile, rich, slightly acidic, moist, but well-drained soils. It doesn’t like too wet or too dry soils. It thrives in full sun, but tolerates partial shade. Resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered form winds. Late frosts may damage the buds, but it is more resilient to early frost than other Magnolias. Intolerant of urban pollution. Low maintenance plant. Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' is a cross of M. kobus and M. stellata 'Rosea'. It’s an exquisite flowering shrub, perfect for small informal, cottage, or woodland gardens. It is great as a specimen plant and for informal hedges and screens, excellent for lawns, foundations, and shrub borders.
