Fagus sylvatica Dawkye is a medium-sized, fastigiated, pyramidal, deciduous tree with an elegant, slender, columnar habit and soft, smooth, grey bark. Oval to ovate, glossy, dark green leaves that turn orange and brown in autumn. Small, inconspicuous yellowish flowers grow in catkins and bloom in spring. They are followed by large, beech nuts. Fagus sylvatica Dawkye prefers humus rich, moist, well-drained soils and doesn’t tolerate too wet or waterlogged soils. It thrives in full sun or partial shade. It is moderately tolerant of frost, air pollution and wind. Generally, doesn’t have any serious problems with pests or diseases. Easy to grow, low maintenance plant. It can be difficult to transplant. Fagus sylvatica Dawkye is a gorgeous columnar, perfect as a specimen tree in large gardens and parks, great for avenues and broad or narrow streets. It can be used for informal hedges and screens.
