Acer davidii Viper is a multi-stemmed deciduous large shrub or small tree, also known as Snake Bark Maple because of its attractive green and silvery-white striped bark that resembles snake skin. Its oblong dark green leaves turn bright orange and yellow in autumn. Clusters of dropping pale yellow flowers appear in spring and are followed by pinkish-brown fruit. Acer davidii Viper thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun or semi-shade, but tolerates most soil types, even poorly drained. Although it is very hardy and resilient, new shots can be damaged by frost. Therefore, it should be sheltered from strong winds. This small and slow-growing tree is suitable for small or medium-sized gardens, and urban spaces. Very easy to grow and maintain, it is especially attractive in winter when its “skin snake” bark is exposed.
