Abelia 'Edward Goucher' is a hybrid between Abelia × grandiflora and Abelia schumannii. It is developed in 1911. by Edward Goucher of the United States Department of Agriculture. It’s a broadleaf semi-evergreen shrub with reddish branches, glossy, dark green leaves that turn purplish in autumn, and small lilac-pink trumpet-shaped flowers with bronze-tinged calyx lobes. Abelia 'Edward Goucher' is very easily grown in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in full sun and is resilient to pests and diseases. Needs pruning in late winter or early spring, and hard pruning every 3 or 4 years. This compact, bushy shrub with fragrant pink flowers is perfect for cottage or urban gardens, for planting in beds and borders, and for growing in containers. Its elegantly arching branches makes it a great specimen plant. It can be used for informal hedges but may lose its elegant appearance if formally shaped.
