Pinus banksiana, commonly known as Jack pine or scrub pine, is a species of coniferous tree native to North America. It is a hardy, fast-growing tree that can thrive in harsh conditions such as rocky, sandy, and infertile soils, making it an important species in reforestation efforts. The Jack pine typically grows to a height of 20 to 30 feet with a narrow, conical crown and a straight trunk. The needles are 1.5 to 2.5 inches long, bluish-green in color, and grow in pairs. The cones are small, measuring 1.5 to 2.5 inches long, and have a serotinous trait that allows them to remain closed for years until exposed to high heat, such as from a forest fire. This adaptation helps the Jack pine to regenerate after a fire by releasing seeds that quickly establish themselves in the newly cleared area.
