Salix vitelliana, or Golden Willow, is a vigorous, spreading, multi-stemmed, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with golden yellow to orange stems, especially attractive in winter, toothed, lance-shaped, mid-green leaves, yellow in autumn, and small, insignificant, yellow catkins in spring. Male and female catkins are born on separate trees. Female flowers are followed by small capsules. Salix vitelliana is very adaptable and can grow in a wide range of soils, except chalk, but prefers average, moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Resistant to frost. Low maintenance, doesn’t require much pruning, but since new stems have the best colour, it is recommended to cut them in winter to the ground. It can withstand coastal conditions. Golden Willow is an attractive, easy to grow, ornamental shrub. Perfect for shrub borders or informal hedges and screens in informal, cottage, and coastal gardens. It is great for the erosion control, planted along streams or ponds. Suitable for coastal gardens.
