Buddleja Adonis Blue, or Butterfly Bush Adonis Blue, is a hybrid raised by Elizabeth Keep in 1983. It’s a medium-sized, vigorous, fast-growing, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub with bushy habit and arching stems. Its leaves are long, lance-shaped, green or grey-green with greyish, felted undersides. Large clusters of tiny, fragrant flowers in unique shade of vibrant dark blue, with orange-yellow centres, bloom in summer and early autumn. Very attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Buddleja Adonis Blue is easily grown. It prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun. It tolerates partial shade but it becomes weedy and sparse, with much less flowers. It is resistant to drought, generally pest-free and disease-free. Low maintenance and slightly salt tolerant. May die to the ground in cold winters but emerge again in spring. Buddleja Adonis Blue is best grown in informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens. It is perfect for a foundation shrub, an accent plant, or as a background in beds and borders.
