Berberis Claret Red is a hybrid of Berberis darwinii and Berberis empetrifolia. It’s a medium-sized, vigorous, rosemary-like evergreen shrub with claret red stems. Its narrow, rigid leaves are bronzy-green when they are young, and turn dark green with blue-grey undersides as they mature. Clusters of beautiful, rich orange and red flowers appear in mid to late spring and are followed by black-red fruits in autumn. Berberis Claret Red can grow in any type of soil, as long as it is moist and well-drained, which excludes waterlogged soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade. It’s a very adaptable and low maintenance plant. Berberis Claret Red is great for hedges and screens. It can be used in flowerbeds as a colourful background for small flowers, and along patios and walkways as natural edging. It’s a perfect addition to any cottage, informal or wildlife garden.
