Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens', or Western Red Cedar 'Atrovirens' is a tall, vigorous, pyramidal, coniferous, evergreen tree with reddish-brown peeling bark, and dropping sprays of aromatic, glossy, scale-like, deep green leaves, bronze tinged in winter, with pineapple scent when crushed. It produces attractive, egg-shaped, brown cones. Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soils, but can adapt to a wide range of soils. It is not a demanding plant and requires very little maintenance. It thrives in full sun, but is tolerant of partial shade. It is very resistant to frost, but needs to be protected from harsh, drying winds. It doesn’t like hot, humid climates, and can’t tolerate drought. Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' is a perfect plant for hedges and privacy screens. It is fast-growing and suitable for trimming. It is also great as a specimen plant in large informal, cottage, and woodland gardens.
