Ilex J.C. Van Tol is a small evergreen tree of pyramidal habit with light green-brown bark with purple stems when young, dense, broad, oval crown, and glossy, almost spineless, deep-green leaves, olive-green underneath. Small, inconspicuous, white flowers bloom in spring and are followed by masses of attractive, bright red berries in autumn and winter. A self-fertile variety, attractive to birds and bees. J.C. Van Tol Holly is an adaptable plant that grows well in various types of soil, but prefers fertile, hummus-rich, slightly acidic, moist and well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun and partial shade. It is resistant to frost and wind, but needs to be sheltered from drying winter winds. Ilex J.C. Van Tol is a lovely, tough, ornamental plant, perfect as a specimen plant, or for hedges and screens. It is suitable for growing in containers, ideal for patio and roof gardens. Great for informal cottage and wildlife gardens and coastal areas.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us

During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.

What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
