Acer palmatum 'Scolopendrifolium', also known as the centipede maple, is a distinctive variant of Japanese maple treasured for its striking and unique foliage. This cultivar stands out for its elongated, narrow lobes, giving the leaves a centipede-like appearance, hence the name 'Scolopendrifolium'. The slender, dissected leaves are often a lively green, which transitions to vibrant shades of red, orange, and sometimes purple during the fall, presenting a dazzling autumn display that makes it a sought-after specimen in ornamental horticulture.
Adaptable to a range of soil types, 'Scolopendrifolium' prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soils and benefits from a location offering partial shade, especially in areas with intense afternoon sun, to avoid leaf scorch. It is a relatively slow-growing tree, often reaching around 8 to 12 feet in height, making it a suitable choice for small gardens, patios, or containers.
The uniqueness and ornamental value of Acer palmatum 'Scolopendrifolium' lie not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its versatility and adaptability. Its ability to thrive in various conditions and its moderate size make it an excellent choice for landscapes, while its exceptional foliage provides an elegant, artistic element to the garden, attracting plant enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.
About Us
During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.
What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
