Fast-growing shrubs and hedges are ideal when it comes to filling space and plugging gaps in your garden area. Whether it’s to transform your green space into a secluded oasis of calm or to dampen the noise from passing traffic, these shrubs might just be the answer. Sure, a fence or a brick wall will offer a quick and easy solution, but a lush green hedge will act as a more natural and visually appealing screen – and it’s more environmentally friendly!
Fast-growing shrubs will need annual or semi-annual pruning, as this is key to shaping the hedges, but the small amount of maintenance required will be well worth it once you’re basking in the privacy of your new improved garden space.
Here are our top four fast-growing shrubs for privacy:
Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’

This variety is a highly ornamental evergreen tree that lends itself well to being planted as both a specimen tree and a fast-growing shrub. The Red Robins’ leaves are a vibrant red when they first emerge in spring, with clusters of white flowers emerging from pink buds in late April, followed by bright red fruits later in the summer. You’ll also be pleased to know the plants are easy to grow and will be happy in most soil types!
Leylandii

This is widely known for its aggressive growing power, capable of growing up to three feet per year. This stunning hedge plant adds a touch of elegance and class to your garden space. Regular clipping of this mid-green, spray like foliage during late spring and summer can turn the Leylandii into a dense, formal garden hedge perfect for noise reduction and privacy.
Griselinia littoralis

This is a fast-growing evergreen shrub, ideal for coastal locations as it acts as a fantastic windbreak. Griselinia littoralis is known for its light apple green oval-shaped leaves and small yellow flowers, followed by purple fruits on the female plants when both sexes are grown together later in the year. Although a fast-growing shrub, it is arguably the easiest to maintain and keep in shape.
Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’

This is widely known as the Cherry Laurel. This shrub is perfect for warmer climates and can grow up to three feet per year. With white flowering clusters, underpinned by its glossy evergreen leaves, the Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’ looks best once fully bloomed in the spring months.
Always remember when pruning in the spring to ensure there are no birds’ nests in your hedge, as it is illegal to disturb nesting birds.
