Olive trees – also known by their botanical name of Olea europaea, which means “European Olive”, is a species of tree in the Oleaceae family, traditionally found in the Mediterranean.
Olive trees have become a very poplar tree for British gardens over the past few years, with large specimen trees with their beautiful gnarled trunks planted as a focal point. Smaller, half-standard trees are also very poplar for planting in pots and placed by doorways to create a warm welcome.
Our Olive trees are sourced from our Spanish suppliers. There has been much press coverage in recent years regarding a disease Xylella fastidiosa to which Olive trees are particularly vulnerable. It is vital to keep this disease out of the U.K. and to that end, all of our Olive trees are regularly tested at the nursery where they are grown. We also arrange to have them tested before they leave Spain to ensure their health. Once they land with us, our local DEFRA Agent will arrange to visit and take samples to ensure they are safe to sell. We always welcome these visits and have a good working relationship with our Agent – it is vital to the health of our plants and that of the U.K. as a whole.
We have talked about Olive trees in the past, and further information can be found here. In this blog, you will find useful information on planting, watering and other essential aftercare tips.
We have an excellent selection of Olive trees in stock. With the warmer weather, now is an ideal time to get out into the garden and start to plan the trees and shrubs you would like for the ensuing season.
