At Arundel Arboretum, one of the leading garden centres in West Sussex, we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from our customers since we reopened on 13th May. We have received so many kind comments on how well we have looked after our stock and the overall appearance of our nursery. It has been much appreciated by us all.
For everyone’s safety, we have put in place strict social distancing measures and we are delighted that everyone has embraced this and worked with us to achieve safety for us all.
Our trees and shrubs are looking very good and we are very pleased with how everything is looking. We have an excellent selection of plants to choose from. Whether you are looking for a deciduous tree or an evergreen tree or shrub for screenage, we have many varieties for you to consider.
Following some spectacular blossom on our fruit trees earlier in the spring, we are starting to see many fruits forming.
If you are considering purchasing a tree or shrub for your garden, and you would like some inspiration, we recommend the following to help get you started:
Apple – Bramley
This is probably the most popular cooking apple and the most recognised. The Bramley apple tree produces crops of large fruits with a creamy white flesh, which is full of flavour. It grows vigorously, so if space is limited it is wise to bear this in mind. We have Bramley apple trees available as a fan-trained tree, which is an option if space is of a premium. Pale pink blossom appears in the spring, and the fruit can be used from November through to February.
Apple – James Grieve
A dessert apple and an excellent choice if you have a difficult site. This medium-large size fruit is reliable and hardy. It is a heavy and regular cropper. James Grieve has a soft texture, which is juicy and tangy. Pick from September onwards.
Corylopsis pauciflora (Buttercup Witch Hazel)
Corylopsis pauciflora is a medium sized slow growing, deciduous shrub. When young, its ovate leaves are tinged with red. During the spring, pale yellow fragrant flowers appear. It will be happiest grown in partial shade in either a sheltered or exposed position. It has an eventual height of 1 – 1.5m and a spread of 1.5 – 2.5m.
Morus alba ‘Pendula’
Morus alba ‘Pendula’ is the weeping variety of mulberry. This is a deciduous tree with shiny green leaves, and its weeping habit will eventually reach the ground as the tree matures. It is an ideal choice for a small garden and requires little maintenance. Green flowers appear during the summer. These are followed by berries in the autumn. These initially emerge white before gradually turning dark pink, red or black.
At Arundel Arboretum garden centre in West Sussex, we have an excellent selection of trees and shrubs for your garden. Feel free to get in contact for any enquiries and we look forward to welcoming you.
